Hi there! My name is Victoria Nieto and I am a contemporary visual artist with a focus in oil painting.
I began my art career in 2011 and in 2015 I earned a bachelor's degree minoring in fine art. Since then, I have grown as a self-taught artist.
After a lengthy time living outside of Queens, I moved back in 2015 and have loved every moment of it. I am enamored with the contrast Queens has to that of the towns I was raised and educated in. Growing up in predominantly white, homogenous towns, it was a homecoming of sorts to move back to the most diverse neighborhood in the world.
As a Filipina-Latina woman, I had felt "othered" for a long time but Queens feels like home and it was here that I began to really explore my existence with my art.
Through my art, I examine themes of self identity, femininity, and nature--three things that I feel are divinely connected within me.
Gifted with an eclectic background --culturally, academically, and professionally-- my work tends to reflect that in a loud and colorful way. My art is bold and energetic and initially captivates viewers with color and vibrancy. Upon further examination, symbols from the natural world evoke deeper introspection and contemplation as each viewer interprets through the lens of their own experiences. I hope people view my art and reflect. I want them to see beauty in wildness. Wildness does not always have to be tamed and conquered and there is great beauty in the unknown and unpredictable. As a society, I feel that we have distanced ourselves from nature and therefore we have also distanced ourselves from our rawest forms. And I think there is a lot to learn when we strip everything away. In a way, I hope that my art allows people to see the truth. |
